Ask the Expert: Churchill’s Fireside & Patio
Inside Out

With nesting becoming a more popular lifestyle choice, the interest to spruce your home and entertain from home has increased tremendously. Not only is it common to revamp the interior of the house, but the outdoor living space has also become a focal point as it is a great place to lounge or host guests, especially given the lengthy months of warm weather in the south. Patio furniture, grills and outside décor are very important elements for the backyard, and with their gain in interest and use, quality is vital.
Even though southern weather is ideal for a cookout, it can also be harsh on outdoor equipment; therefore, ‘heavy duty’ is an important feature to consider when choosing outdoor furnishings. Fortunately, there is an increase in resilient, fashionable furniture and Dorothy Duhon, from Churchill’s Fireside & Patio, is a great source to help determine what is durably pleasing.

Outdoor furniture comes in a variety of materials, but aluminium and a marine grade polymer are the best choices, according to Duhon. The aluminium will not rust and is durable while the polymer, by design, is made to handle all types of weather. These two materials come in a variety of colors, but Duhon suggests naturals like rust and bronze finishes. Keeping the base neutural provides accent colors can be easily interchangeable.
The easiest way to accent your patio or backyard is with cushions and pillows, but choose a proper material that will withstand the weather. For example, Sunbrella fabrics and Dacron foam are used in sturdy patio cushions because they are water and UV resistant. One suggestion that Duhon encourages is when shopping for outside accessories, use a business that has been around for a while. This way, if you ever want to add or replace other pieces it will not be as difficult compared to buying a box set that may be seasonal or only produced once. Another idea to make the outdoor living space more cohesive is to incorporate a rug, pottery and lighting. These elements complete the look produces a more enticing backyard. Duhon says, “If it looks nice, you are more likely to get out of the house and actually look forward to going outside.”

Another attractive element that you may want to consider implementing for your outdoor refuge is a fire pit. Fire pits provide quality family time and a common area for family and guests to gather during a cookout. Although fire pits are great visuals and gathering areas, they may be dangerous depending on the age of your guests, so an alternative form might be better. Fireplaces and fire features are available with attractive appeals, and are a considerably safer because they are enclosed or easily controlled. Dimplex, a fireplace company, has a feature that creates a fire façade using electricity. The way this fireplace works is by creating a faux fire out of water vapor, and the best part about this is that the “flame” is not scorching, which is safe for every household.
With the abundance of products eagerly awaiting placement into your humble backyard abode, assembling them may be complex, but their quality deserves proper installation. Make sure that wherever you choose to shop, have them contruct your piece. “Quality of product is equally as important as quality of installation,” says Duhon.
