Fourth of July Firework Safety

The 4th of July, a time to fire up grills and fire-off fireworks, and for Emergency Room doctors, among the most concerning times of the year. But while the perils facing hand and fingers on our Day of Independence are well documented, how protected is your home this holiday weekend?

Though not often on the top of mind in times of celebration, fire safety should always take a high billing on the priority list, whenever fireworks are concerned.  Most home security systems come standard with smoke detector and fire alarm protection.  However, these measures can only do so much in the face of recklessness.  Never mix alcohol and fireworks.    But aside from practicing basic social responsibility, heed the following tips to ensure a fire-free firework display:

  • Obey local laws and statutes regarding setting off fireworks in your area.
  • Never set off fireworks indoors.
  • Do not put fireworks, no matter how seemingly harmless (i.e. sparklers), in the hands of children.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher on hand when setting off fireworks.
  • Never point a firework at another individual or into an open door or window.
  • Keep a safe distance from all fireworks before and after lighting the fuse.
  • Read and obey all warnings and instructions found on any firework packaging.

Firework safety may seem like common sense to some.  But far too many celebrations are tempered every year by the results of carelessness.
