Moving? Don’t Forget Security Fundamentals

Moving can be both exciting and stressful. But, amid all the hubbub of switching homes, its important to lay the same groundwork in your new home to guarantee the safety of you and your family. It could be useful to lay out a priority list:

1.       Select a home security system – Monitored home security systems in particular are invaluable in protecting your home, easing the burden as you settle into your new digs.  Plus, as you get used to a new part of town, or in many cases an entirely new town, knowing your home is professionally protected can bring instant peace of mind and helping to ensure a smooth transition.

2.       Change locks – If you’re moving into an apartment complex or residential community, it’s likely your locks have already been changed for you.  However, it’s best to check with the office to make sure, as there shouldn’t be any keys to your home in circulation that aren’t in use by an occupant. The same precaution should be taken with previously occupied houses, as you can’t be too cautious when it comes to your home.

3.       Introduce yourself to neighbors – Not just polite, but making your presence known in the neighborhood is an effective safety measure as well. Your new neighbors will be able to identify you and your family and contact you if something looks suspicious, rather than assume unfamiliar faces must be part of your party.
