Preparing for Flood Season

As we sit in the tail end of June, were almost midway through baseball season, just beginning the summer season, but rapidly approaching a less celebrated time period flood season. In the United States and abroad, the months of July and August are recognized as global flood season. But no need to pick up shop right now and move to higher ground.  There are several steps you can take to protect your home and family, as opposed to after-the-fact regret.

What can you do today?

Flood insurance – In the worst case scenario, flood insurance can help to cover any resulting water damage.  Though flood insurance can be expensive, if you live in an area prone to flooding, it can be a key consideration in safeguarding against future losses.

Water sensors – Companies like ADT provide home security system packages with optional water sensor upgrades, so you can be notified if your basement is leaking and take appropriate action. Not only does this issue an alert in the event of natural floods, but faulty pipes and other household water hazards.

Safety kits – It’s best to be prepared in the event of an emergency.  Those who live in easily floodable areas should consider packing a safety kit per family member in case of a major flood, complete with a lifejacket, flashlight, batteries and first aid kit, as well as storable food/water.
